Imperious Realm is
the first book in the Reign of the North
Forest series by Athene Z. Adam, a compelling meld of fantasy and science
fiction introducing the world of Eiyesa. The population is confronted with a
distressing conundrum — adults age faster while the young don't age anymore and
can't reproduce. The future of the planet looks bleak and if things were just
possible, Sergen, the son of a powerful politician should be gone from home
with his mother. But he and his mother are held hostage at home by Erik, his
father. The planet is facing threats from humans who are moving in with the
intent of colonizing the Eiyesa while the planet has to deal with existential
problems. Can the young ones muster enough fight to face the impending dangers
posed by humans and death?
This is a deftly plotted, beautifully written tale that moves fast. The writing
is gorgeous and the author introduces dialogue right from the first page. The
engaging dialogues help in deepening characterization and in moving the plot
forward. Adam's world-building is impeccable and I particularly enjoyed the way
the author allows relationships to shape throughout the narrative. Characters
like Sergen, Kale, Ivar, Drimys, and others, are memorable, vividly drawn, and
flawed. Sergen will arrest the attention of readers from the moment they meet
him, frail and utterly dependent as a baby to how he evolves throughout. The
prose is excellent and the setting is woven with incredible detail. The world's
tapestry is intricate and a phenomenal conflict forces readers to stick with
the characters. Imperious Realm is
atmospheric and richly detailed, a transporting tale for lovers of fantasy and
science fiction.
