Parul Somani's The Path of Least Regret asks a question that will change your life: What if the secret to the hardest choices life throws at you isn’t finding the right answer, but finding the answer you can live with? That question is at the heart of this book and discussed in the author’s decision-making framework created in the most unforgiving of classrooms: days after giving birth to her second daughter, Somani, an MIT- and Harvard-trained Bain consultant, was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer at thirty-one. When data and analysis failed to guarantee an outcome, she stopped asking “What is the safest choice?” and asked instead, “Which path will bring me the greatest peace of mind?” Her eye-opening, compelling book centers on the idea that regret isn’t a backward-looking burden to avoid but a forward-looking compass. Rather than trying to please an unknowable future self, the author binds her decisions to her present values. She maps out the five-phase emotional journey of change (awareness, processing, exploration, decision, and adaptation) and provides tools to navigate these phases with intention, courage, and agency.

I loved how Somani addresses what makes some decisions hard to make, brilliantly discussing steps such as permitting yourself to feel without drowning; dismantling mental roadblocks like ego, fear, and imposter syndrome by seizing control, letting go, and reframing; defining a personal North Star through ikigai. What stuck with me were her three crossroads questions: What am I optimizing for? How do I feel about my options? Which path maximizes peace of mind? The book brims with insight and wisdom, and the later chapters deliver compelling lessons. I learned that silver linings can be created rather than awaited, that detours aren’t failures, and that friendship and celebration are not mere luxuries but strategies for resilience. The Path of Least Regret will be a delight for fans of Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant's Option B, while fans of Susan David's Emotional Agility will find a more structured companion in this book. Parul Somani brilliantly distinguishes herself by pairing grief work with a repeatable decision toolkit. Delivered through a candid memoir, accessible research, and compelling anecdotes, this book will find a home with caregivers, leaders, and anyone who wants to feel more intimately connected with themselves and the present. I needed this book at this time.
