In From Broken Pieces to Peace, Kimi Y. Bivins’
psychologically grounded and motivating book, she writes: “It took me forty-six
years of trial and error to realize I am not broken. I’ve just dealt with many
broken men. I refuse to believe anything else.” This book is a raw memoir that
is filled with practical Christian relationship advice. Drawing from her
personal journey as a single believer at forty-five, Bivins recounts a life characterized
by dysfunction, including being born to a married man, experiencing rape at the
age of twenty by someone she trusted, and navigating inappropriate
relationships even within the church. However, the narrative shifts from trauma
to restoration through faith in Christ. The book is structured into chapters
covering boundaries, spouse checklists, and advice for men and women,
concluding with heartfelt poetry and a powerful message of self-worth. This is
an insightful guide for readers to heal from past baggage before seeking true
love, and the author outlines the steps and the mindset one needs to cultivate
to make the journey from brokenness to wholeness.
From Broken Pieces to Peace felt like a gift, and I loved
the confident voice and Kimi Y. Bivins’ honesty. It was like sitting at a
coffee shop and having a serious, engaging conversation with a friend who opens
her heart to reveal its scars while sharing lessons life and her relationship
with God have taught her, and in a voice that is compassionate and uplifting. She
takes about essential elements of healthy relationships, from friendships to
romantic relationships and family dynamics, articulating brilliantly on healing,
setting boundaries, and understanding biblical worth. Bivins grounds her advice
in Scripture, challenging clichés such as “Jesus is your husband” by citing
Genesis 2:21-24 to show God's original intent for partnership. She uses Biblical
stories like the story of Ruth to encourage proactive faith rather than passive
waiting. Relationship lessons are specific and stern: establish boundaries with
the opposite sex (no sex before marriage; meet in public), keep relationship
issues private from family, and use a “trusty checklist” for potential spouses
on finances, faith, and integrity. She urges men to be “Kings” of integrity and
women to recognize they are “Queens” whose beauty is not for sale. This book is
specifically written for Christians who want to date with purpose and for general
readers looking for insights into healthy relationships. This is a book I should
have read ten years ago.
