Rachel Bate, a calico kitten decides to embark on a dangerous adventure. Under
the moon and the stars, he sees a coyote howling in the distance. Calico thinks
there must be something better than the monotony of life as he knows it.
Besides, it’s been a while since his mother left them. So enticed by the

night, he begins to think about the impulsiveness of his decision. He hasn't
thought about where to get food and water. When he meets the coyote who
introduces himself as Bliss, Calico is frightened, believing the coyote will
devour him, but Bliss becomes a guide leading him to a destination he least
expected.
Rachel Bate's book is a beautifully illustrated story for
Children, a tale of adventure and courage. It follows a young kitten, Calico as
he finally makes the decision to go on an adventure, a quest for that home he
has always dreamed about. The friends he finds on the way are most unlikely and
help comes from the least expected person. This is a story that brilliantly
introduces young readers to the concept of stepping beyond their comfort zones
and the beauty of exploration. The beautiful setting and the author's ability
to evoke compelling imagery are elements that enrich this compelling tale. Desert Bliss offers a keen examination
of adventure, risk-taking, and friendship. It is a tale about the rewards of
daring to do something utterly different. Rachel Bate creates characters that
children will love in this fable.
