This colorfully illustrated Children’s book is packed with
adventure and strong lessons on friendship. Coney - A Trip to Luna Park by Jeffrey Lindberg tells the
story of Selena, a little rabbit who suddenly discovers that the place it has
always called home is about to be destroyed because of the new amusement park
being built on Coney Island. When Millie first catches the attention of Selena
from her trolley car, her first reaction is that of wonder at how high the
rabbit can jump. But they quickly become friends and set out to confront the
men and machines that are building the theme park. Selena is not convinced even
when the kind-looking man leans down and tells the rabbit that “We are building
a very special place.” Follow Millie and Selena on a mission that quickly
becomes quite an adventure as they set out to save Selena’s home.
This is a wonderfully accomplished book for children,
complete with dazzling images, a beautiful world to navigate, and compelling
characters to follow. The friendship between Selena and Millie is intelligently
written, and while the rabbit bears many human qualities, it doesn’t fail to be
a rabbit at any moment. The use of anthropomorphism is exceptionally executed.
Young readers will learn that compassion and being there for someone in their
time of need is at the core of healthy relationships. Themes of nature,
friendship, and adventure are brilliantly written, and apart from Selena and
Millie, readers will encounter other companions on the journey, including the
elephants, friendly Fred, giraffes, and others. There are exciting scenes
crafted to create suspense like when Selena disappears, leaving Millie anxious
and wondering where the rabbit must be and what might happen to it. Coney - A Trip to Luna Park is a
delightful read for Children, a book that contains what young readers look for
— adventure.
