Celia Jane Strongue has long sought to emerge from the shadow of her husband, Stanley (“The Scrap Metal King of Hunts Point”). Upon his death and her inheriting his wealth, Celia plans to establish herself on Cape Cod. She plans to win over the locals with her largesse. Her plans to meet with renowned artist Mavis Chandry are dashed when she is electrocuted at Mavis’ home. Helena Handbasket inherited a large estate at HomePort and has become a patron of the arts. However, Helena’s role as beloved socialite is wreaking havoc in her marriage. Helena is set to showcase the work of Mavis Chandry when vandals break into Helena’s art museum. The vandalism seems to be random until Celia’s body is found, setting off a mystery that could devastate Helena's close-knit community.
The Distance Between Us is a fun and charming mystery that will win readers from the get-go. The story functions well on multiple levels as a whodunit with elements of humor and a splendid mix of emotional gravitas. Author A.C. Burch writes each character populating this colorful tale with measured care and concern, making each character memorable. Helena emerges as the true heart of the narrative from her initial appearance. She is protective of not only friends and family but of her hometown. She is willing to give as much of herself as of her money. The plot unfolds at a steady clip, the action while approaching zaniness never goes off the rails. This is a novel that will elicit many emotions with its satisfying conclusion. It is a winner from A.C. Burch — twisty, engaging, and balanced.

There is a particular kind of silence that falls in the early hours — not the absence of sound, but the quiet rearrangement of the world before it begins again. A kettle sighs. The light finds its way through the window in thin, precise strokes. In that stilln...
