The priest had raised the ire of a few parishioners when he spoke out against the growing menace of Nazism. His forthrightness sealed his fate, and Nazi sympathizers are ready to murder him on Long Island brutally. Father Patrick O’Riley was aghast when he learned of his friend and fellow priest’s murder. O’Riley accepts an offer to serve in his friend’s stead as parish priest in Yaphank. O’Riley plans to learn more about the circumstances behind the assassination, and he enlists fellow members of his covert group, The Alliance of St. Michael, to assist him. Meanwhile, in Germany, Liam Wolff watches in horror as his country grows divided as the Nazi brownshirts oppress non-Aryans, particularly Jewish residents. When a family Liam is close to is threatened, Liam plans an escape for the family with their priceless artwork. Liam will need the assistance of the alliance to see his plot through. But can they succeed?

The takeover of Germany is just beginning as this fascinating mystery novel commences. The characters who inhabit this potent work run the gamut from rebel priest to repentant thief, remorseful spy to former Presidents. The alliance is a covert group of disparate personalities who tangle with the malign forces in the world, whether they be fifth-column actors or crooked cops. One of the most interesting aspects of the novel is the story of reformed thief Arthur Davies. Davies was a world-class poacher of priceless art, but his capture by a member of the alliance provided him a second chance, fighting for a cause greater than himself. Author Ray Keating has penned a delightful read that shines with elements of mystery, intrigue, and tolerance. Subversion is a story that will attract those who enjoy a great mystery, spy, and historical drama. It is a tale with resonant themes and that will appeal to contemporary American readers as conversations on race become a current reality.
