The blistering heat of a late summer day had relinquished its grip as the evening wore on. Cynthia Young was a street walker attempting to make it through another day when she was accosted by two Detroit police officers. Their hassling transitioned into an arrest and brutal sexual assault followed by an execution-style shooting. Unfortunately, the actions taken by these two officers were not abnormal in 1960s Detroit. The actions of the “Big Four” of the 13th precinct were often excessive if not outright illegal. However, the low crime rate in their precinct pleased their bosses and prosecutors. The big four roamed free until their actions were noticed by maverick journalist Joanne McGarrity and prosecutor Wesley Norris. Soon, their actions will face scrutiny as the decade progresses and the racial tensions threaten to tear the city down.
Then Came Four is the latest excellent crime novel from author Edward Izzi (“Dinner at Tony Napoli’s”). The intense drama begins with the horrifying violation of Ms. Young’s rights and life and continues in its ferocity through most of the story. The malevolent actions of the crooked quartet of cops are balanced by the men and women who have opted to take a stand against them. Izzi allows the narrative to be seen through the views of the morally bankrupt officers along with people like Anthony Fiorello, the black sheep son of a powerful judge who owes his law degree to Norris and is soon romantically involved with McGarrity. Fiorello’s character development over the story provides a key emotional impact. Izzi has written a rewarding book combining aspects of justice, friendship, and love with broad appeal. It is an enthralling thriller with dramatic scenes and emotionally rich moments.
