Big Lake Troubles is a gripping legal and
environmental thriller set around the fictional Blue Lake in Wisconsin, where a
diverse group of activists, lawyers, and former convicts unite to fight against
a powerful coal company threatening their community and ecosystem. Jason, a
guilt-ridden writer with a traumatic past, teams up with Grace, an idealistic
environmental attorney, to expose corporate greed and protect the region’s
health and natural beauty. Their fight for justice leads them into dangerous
confrontations involving hidden evidence, aggressive corporate tactics, and
personal reckonings. Alongside Earl, a reformed ex-con seeking redemption, and
Camille, a courageous veterinarian turned activist, they navigate courtroom
battles and life-threatening risks. The novel’s dual timelines and shifting
perspectives build toward a bittersweet resolution.
Jeffrey D. Boldt surprised me at multiple levels and
delivered such entertainment that I never anticipated when I picked up this
book. Earl’s arc—from prison to becoming a key player in the fight against
coal—offers one of the most emotionally resonant threads in the story. At the same time, Jason’s internal struggles with grief and guilt provide the psychological underpinning
for this story. The natural setting of Blue Lake feels like a symbol of
ecological fragility and a battleground for human values. Supporting characters, such as Courtney, a conflicted corporate lawyer, and Camille, whose violent encounter with a security dog becomes a pivotal turning point, enrich the narrative
with a sense of urgency. The courtroom drama is pulsating and transforms the
narrative into a page-turning story. Fans of The Overstory by Richard
Powers and Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver will not be able to
pass on Big Lake Troubles. I marveled at how Boldt skillfully blends
scientific detail with character-driven drama, offering a nuanced legal activism,
and characters that are not just genuinely flawed but utterly unforgettable.
