The Lost Books – Romance and Adventure in Tudor Times by Mo Conlan follows a motley group on an adventure to restore a legacy and recover treasured lost books; a fun read with an intriguing historical setting. Henry Tudor sacks England, grabbing the monasteries and convents with their wealth. In that time, precious manuscripts disappear from the monasteries. Meanwhile, Squire Henry Truelove of Cornwall only wants to win the hand of Morwenna. It is a difficult enterprise for him as his family estate is heavily taxed. Squire Henry Truelove and his group of friends decide to fight back, creating a group called “holy pirates.” Their mission is to bring down the taxman and to recover the lost books. But that mission is easier planned than achieved and what chances do they have?

First, I was captivated by the lush and finely drawn setting. Readers have a strong feeling that the setting in The Lost Books: Romance and Adventure in Tudor Times is diligently researched and skillfully written. The author weaves linguistic shades into the dialogues, capturing interesting elements of the cultural world and the locales the characters navigate. The protagonist is a man who stands to lose a lot and he is fighting to protect his family estate from the ruinous taxes while pursuing a love that seems too challenging. The characters are lovely and the banter is as thoughtful as it is enticing, allowing readers a wonderful sense of plot. Mo Conlan writes in beautiful prose, spicing the narrative with humor, which balances the pathos that occasionally moves the story. This novel is a historical adventure locked inside a well-crafted romance and a place that charms — heart-blistering and utterly engaging tale.
