Where Are We Tomorrow? by Tavi Taylor Black is an engaging tale on life’s choices, a story that follows colorful characters as they face dilemmas in life while dealing with pressures from their jobs. Thirty-six-year-old Alex Evans is happy working as a rock n’ roll touring electrician until an unexpected pregnancy sets in. When she experiences a miscarriage, her desire for motherhood becomes real to her, but her partner, Connor, is not yet ready to be a father, a man ten years her senior. Alex loves her job, and with her are other women, including the rock star Sadie Estrada, and Lily, Sadie’s personal assistant. While at a concert in Italy, Sadie is injured when the rig falls. With the tour halted, the four women decide to rent a house in Tuscany for vacation. As they settle in, their lives begin to unravel in unusual ways as the wounds are laid bare and secrets brought to light. It is a moment the characters must face their fears and help each other grow or fall apart.
Tavi Taylor Black’s novel will have an irresistible appeal to fans of tales featuring rock stars, but what sets it aside is that it takes the focus off the rock star and looks at characters that operate behind-the-scenes most of the time. The descriptions of the experiences on the road are vivid and captivating and they allow readers to feel the characters. The characters are multilayered and fully developed. Alex was my favorite and I enjoyed how the author wrote her inner world. The painful experience of miscarriage and her sudden realization that she wants to be a mother are written in a way that is poignantly resonant. The prose is dazzling, the narrative voice irresistible, and the plot littered with strong moments of emotional conflict. Black weaves compelling themes into the story, including addiction, the struggle with religion, rock n’ roll culture, love, and family. Where Are We Tomorrow? is a winner for fans of Women’s Fiction, a dive-in, miss-your-bus-stop, and lose-sleep reading experience. The author uses life on the road of a band to masterfully explore issues that are real and to create characters that will stay with readers long after the last page is turned.
