James Houston Turner’s Into the Eye is a geopolitical thriller that introduces former KGB colonel Aleksandr Talanov, who is thrust into the heart of a diabolical human-trafficking network in central Africa. Tasked with the covert KTAC team, Talanov must locate and rescue Dr. Shawni Juma, a virologist who has uncovered evidence linking the brutal warlord Ojo Mutebi to the wealthy communist ideologue Istvan Szabo. When a rescue helicopter is betrayed from within, and Talanov is stranded in a rebel camp, the mission explodes into a high-stakes, globe-trotting race. From the savannahs of Uganda and a clandestine aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean to the port of Douala and the Ozark Mountains, the team pursues a conspiracy that snakes from African refugee camps to the highest echelons of American power.

I was fascinated by how well Turner balances breakneck pacing with elaborately drawn characters, ensuring that every firefight, double-cross, and narrow escape keeps fans riveted. Talanov is a compellingly flawed hero, stubborn, lethal, and struck right in the heart by loss. Larisa, the woman who literally walks away from her wedding to fight beside him, and Shawni Juma, whose Christian faith fuels her unflinching courage, ground the novel’s spectacle in authentic human stakes. The setting is vividly immersive, whether Turner is depicting the mechanical hum of a carrier’s war room, the suffocating menace of a rebel camp, or the isolation of a Texas ranch. James Houston Turner’s work confronts the rot of institutional corruption, the horror of human trafficking, and the defiant power of hope. Turner’s storytelling is muscular, though the labyrinthine plot occasionally risks narrative overload. Into the Eye is a searing story of heroism and the refusal to surrender to darkness, written with sparkling prose and captivating dialogue.
