Susan Sorella has emerged from the rigors of a trial triumphant with an acquittal for her client. Her bliss is short-lived when she learns of a new client her firm will be representing. A man stands accused of murdering an MLB umpire. The evidence is building against her client, but Susan is skeptical. Events take an unexpected turn when the client is nearly murdered in jail. Susan has worked on tough cases in the past and this current one certainly fits the bill. Susan is resourceful and begins to look into the state’s evidence against her client which includes the alleged murder weapon. Susan has connections to elements of the Boston underworld and is unafraid of utilizing them when needed. Soon, she is headed southbound to pursue relevant leads but faces perils that will keep her on her guard.
Murder in Blue is a rollicking mystery that proves entertaining from its outset and doesn’t let up. Susan Sorella shines as an intelligent lawyer devoted to her clients. She defends them to the best of her ability, even when guilty as sin. She detests injustice and is willing to go the extra mile to right a wrong, even if that means enlisting the aid of men like Mafia boss Frank Romano. Susan’s charm is in being more than a one-dimensional character, a possible romantic entanglement with a police detective could compromise her case. Author Mike Avery has penned a splendid whodunit where the list of suspects becomes more numerous with an accelerating body count and the tenacity of the heroine protagonist only increases. This is an excellent book with a broad appeal.
