Desiderata by M.P. Desmarais delivers an engrossing
science fiction novel with fully fleshed-out characters and a conflict that
grows in stakes with each page. The hydropower systems of Gracyr are failing,
and there is an urgent need for a new source of energy. Four unlikely allies—a gifted
swordsman Gerrard, a fierce swordfighter Andromeda, a relentless scholar
Regina, and a disturbed fighter Hector—are on a dangerous quest to find a
solution. From bartending to privateering and bounty hunting, their journey
takes them deep into uncharted territory, where they must face off with the
monstrous tyrant, Armando. Armando wants to harness a strange alien energy
source from a crashed spacecraft so he can wield unparalleled power in the land.
As these diverse companions face impossible odds against a mountain that cannot
be broken and a ruthless leader who always wins, they discover that true
strength lies not just in sword or magic, but in harmonizing their hearts and
minds. Will they stand a chance?
This gorgeous blend of fantasy and Sci-fi opens with action,
and the pulsating action punctuates every page of the narrative. I was
captivated by the beautiful writing and the consistent narrative voice. The prose
balances terrific descriptions with sparkling dialogues and timely paragraph
breaks to create an enticing experience for the reader. The stellar
characterization is one of the strong elements that set this story apart. From
Armando, the emperor of Ezmondia, to the warriors fighting for what is right
and the members of the Order of Oranlak, such as Ursula, these characters are
tautly developed, likable, and believable. I was delighted to read about Regina’s
motivations and to follow Hector, a guarded warrior with an enchanted sword. The
setting in Desiderata spans the grandeur of Ezmondia’s decaying empire,
the diverse lands of Makeva, and ancient sites—forests, mines, and hidden
chambers—where secrets of power and magic reside. M.P. Desmarais is a
page-turner for fantasy fans, and the superb storytelling makes it even more
enjoyable.
