The Wenamak Web by Marie Howalt is an engaging sci-fi that follows Richard Hart, a private investigator, as he arrives in Wenamak to meet an old acquaintance, Chrys, a doctor who has a job offer for him. Richard and his companions — spaceship pilot Eddie and travel guide writer Alannah — quickly discover dark secrets beneath the gleaming surface of Wenamak. On this planet where the dominant Wendek species can smell fear and lies, they are drawn into a web of illegal trade and exploitation. With their unique skills and expertise, they'll need to explore the treacherous landscape to complete their mission — but nothing can prepare them for the unexpected reunion that awaits. From the gritty underbelly of intergalactic crime to the exotic beauty of alien cultures, Colibri Investigations will stop at nothing to get to the truth. And this time, they'll need all their wits and bravery to survive the dangers that lurk in the shadows.

Marie Howalt introduces the conflict right off the bat. The invitation from Chrys has a tinge of mystery to it, and the author doesn’t waste time drawing readers into a world of underground fighting rings and illegal weapons trade where Richard must decide if he will take on the job. Marie Howalt takes the reader through the intricacies of language and culture, highlighting the difficulties of communicating across species lines. The novel also explores the differences between human and Wendek cultures, showcasing their unique customs and ways of life. The characters in The Wenamak Web are sophisticated and relatable. Richard Hart is a complex character with a rich backstory. The tension builds quickly in this immersive tale, and the stakes grow as the reader turns the pages.

Howalt has created a unique and distinct species, the Wendek, similar to humans but with some differences. They are bipedal and mammalian and have features similar to those of humans. The novel takes place in Wenamak, where humans and other species have settled. The description of the city, Kwipadam, provides a vivid picture of a thriving metropolis with different neighborhoods and districts. The mention of a commercial district, educational institutions, living areas, and entertainment options suggests a well-established society. The Wenamak Web is a well-structured novel that is balanced and deft, and the author is keen on depicting a society reeling from crime yet one that feels real. World-building is impeccably accomplished with advanced technology. In this world, patch-enabled wristbands with high-speed PlaNet connections and medical equipment that can treat serious injuries are a reality. This technology is integrated seamlessly into the story. The novel examines the social and political implications of inter-species relationships. Fans of science fiction with elaborately developed characters, a phenomenal conflict, and a stunningly imagined world will find this tale absorbing.
