MENACE: An Agent
Dean Cold Novel by Ray
Keating is a high-octane thriller that blends espionage, politics, intrigue,
and science fiction to deliver unparalleled entertainment. It follows Secret
Service agent Dean Cold as he investigates a mysterious threat targeting the
United States and the world. The action-packed plot launches with an attempted
assassination of President Eisenhower in the Oval Office and another attempt on
the Russian President. The attackers wield bizarre, mind-controlling implants.
Cold and his partner thwart the attack, only to uncover a sprawling conspiracy
involving Soviet officials and scientists manipulating global events with a
technology known as “the injector.” As Cold teams up with brilliant doctor
Maxine Marshall, their pursuit of the truth leads them into a world of
deception, Soviet intrigue, and the revelation of a covert alien race—the
Nykarians—using the injector to infiltrate and control humanity. Facing unmatched
enemies across continents and even confronting their own fears, Cold and his
team must prevent the Nykarians’ plan from succeeding in a climactic battle
that will determine the fate of civilization and the future of humanity.
Ray Keating captivated
me with this tale and reveals himself to be a master in plot development, using
red herrings and cliff-hangers to build suspense while delivering mind-bending
twists to entice. This twisty thriller is remarkable for its relentless pacing,
the seamless fusion of elements from different genres, and the stellar writing
that balances propulsive dialogue with engaging descriptions. The author’s
vivid descriptions transport readers from the tense corridors of the White
House to the icy terrains of the Soviet Union. Characters are memorable,
particularly Dean Cold, whose sense of duty is tested at every moment of the
story, and Maxine Marshall, who brings intellect and empathy to the narrative. The author impressively fleshes out the Nykarians as antagonists, transforming them into an existential threat that intensifies the conflict's stakes. MENACE explores
free will, the ethics of mind control, and the abuse of technological power.
While some may find the pacing uneven or the science behind the mind-control
technology a bit far-fetched, these minor flaws are offset by the story’s
excitement and intelligence. This is one imaginative and immersive science
fiction that merits a five-star rating.
