Skimpton is a fairly popular boy at Faysgarth School —after all, he is the Deputy Head Boy. However, that can sometimes mean constantly having a target on his back. One morning in 1938, Skimpton — sensing a battle that’s about to unfold —knows he will need a miracle to outdo his arch-rivals at Rainingham. Still pretty drunk from shenanigans the night before, Skimpton has no option but to face what's in store for him. The playing field at Faysgarth School slowly turns into a battlefield. Colonel Coombes, Constable Stubbs, and Marcus Dent — the three added obstacles — are not going to make it easier for him either. He is certain, however, that things at Faysgarth aren’t always what they appear to be.

A Skimpton Compendium by John Biggins is a collection of stories that takes readers to the pre-war era, where colonial power and political & sexual tensions were rampant. The author presents a sharp-witted, hilarious, and attention-grabbing array of stories and characters. The sharply defined characters and the eloquent writing style helps readers immerse themselves into the protagonist’s world. From unlikely heroes to villains, each character remains memorable throughout the book. This book is an easy yet interesting read — great for those looking for a good laugh. The author's gift for humor shines through the narrative, offering readers the perfect escape from the doldrums of everyday life.

John Biggins has been collecting boys’ annuals from the 1930s and 1940s. They have inspired him to pen down this wonderful composition of witty and hilarious tales, leaving behind the pre-war public school novels. While he has worked on various children’s television projects, A Skimpton Compendium is his first attempt at fiction, and it’s definitely a noteworthy one. The author has gained vast experience as a book collector, graphic designer, and theater critic, and his wittiness and detailed writing are remarkable throughout the book. Overall, this book is a fun read, one that readers can revisit for a delightful time.
