Tolu' A. Akinyemi's Architects of a Cleaner Financial System delivers a fascinating and often unsettling exploration of the intersection between the seemingly dry world of financial regulation and the vibrant, nuanced landscape of personal experience. The collection boldly addresses anti-money laundering and compliance, weaving technical jargon and industry-specific concerns with potent poetic imagery. This unconventional approach offers a unique and insightful commentary on the ethical implications of the financial system. The collection's opening poem, “Know Your Customer,” skillfully blends the personal – a mother's maiden name – with the bureaucratic – the demand for identification and verification. This juxtaposition highlights the core tension that permeates the collection: the inherent contradiction between the individual and the impersonal structures of the financial industry. Akinyemi's poetry reveals the intrinsic challenges of navigating a system that demands transparency while simultaneously battling those who seek to exploit its opacity for illicit gains.

In “Curriculum Vitae,” the speaker warns that the job market is filled with exaggerated lies and questions: “How do we swim safely to harbor / With so many strings attached?” While “Holes” explores the search for red flags, the poet castigates the corruption of those who steal in “Placement.” He writes: “Illicit funds look for safe shelters / to disguise origins of tainted wealth / with instruments that cripple.” Akinyemi's lyrical utterances, such as describing the need to untangle the ownership chain, bring the abstract concepts of financial crime into sharp relief. Poems like ''Risk Appetite'' further explore the system's loopholes, where excessive risk-taking can lead to reputational and economic consequences.

Akinyemi's willingness to expose the system's hypocrisy is perhaps most evident in “Slave of the Tax Master,” where he denounces the exploitation of everyday people. At the same time, policymakers benefit from offshore tax havens. My favorite, “Fleeting,” resonates with a poignant sense of loss and the ephemeral nature of wealth and power: “Hush has been hushed / into the silent night / and Woodberry / has tasted sour berries.” The imagery is gloriously rendered in the following stanzas: “Tell the sons in the hinterland / that these paths have been watermarked / by calamity / These paths reek of perdition / and a hushed life / behind wooden bars.” The poem's allusions to downfall and impending calamity, coupled with its somber tone, provide a powerful counterpoint to the technical focus of much of the collection. It gives a broader commentary on the consequences of unchecked greed and corruption. Architects of a Cleaner Financial System is a bold and thought-provoking collection that skillfully examines the intricate world of financial regulation. This galvanizing new collection reckons with fraud, corruption, and a new form of slavery in a voice that is fierce and urgent.
