Bold & Chosen by Lillie Diaz is a deeply moving
collection of poetry, stories, and personal essays that explore themes of
faith, perseverance, identity, and redemption. Diaz's work is imbued with raw
honesty and authenticity, which makes it compelling and relatable to readers
who have struggled with similar struggles in their own lives—the themes of the
book center around spiritual awakening and the transformative power of faith. The
author’s dedication to her Father and the reflection on her relationship with
God are the bedrock of the entire collection. Her poetry, particularly in
pieces like “Love Letter to My Father” and “The Rise of Christ,” describes a
journey from darkness into light, emphasizing the profound peace and strength
she finds in her relationship with Jesus. This is highlighted by Diaz's honest
recounting of searching for love and validation in temporary pleasures and
eventually finding solace in the unconditional love of God.
Stylistically, Diaz’s writing is conversational yet deeply
introspective, allowing readers to feel they are sitting across from her,
listening to her life story. Her use of vivid imagery and metaphors brings her
experiences to life, making them tangible and real. The narrative takes readers
on a rollercoaster of emotions, from despair and confusion to hope and joy, condensing
her spiritual discovery's tumultuous but rewarding path into a delightful and
inspiring reading experience. Her discovery of peace in Jesus is captured in a
rich and easy language: “I was looking for a love so deep you only hear about
it in fairy tales. Little did I know there was a king whose heart held me with
a love that never fails.” This statement underscores her realization of a
divine love that is unfailing and ever-present. In “Beauty from Ashes: My
Story, Your Glory,” she writes: “God turns every dark thing into the holiest of
lights.” Such currents of thought will move readers as they read this lyrical
and motivating work. Bold & Chosen is a work of love — a nuanced
love that embraces us in mysterious ways.
